Situational leadership effects in organizational performance

 Introduction


Situational leadership is one of the more widely recognized approaches to leadership which provides prescriptive and anecdotal applications that leaders and supervisors can grasp, it is straightforward and uses a variety of guidelines for both leaders and followers alike (Sayyadi, 2019). 

Over the years, millions of managers from many organizations were trained in situational leadership and it has advanced into law enforcement, parenting and customer service (Blanchard, et al., 1993). 


Types

According to Northouse (2016), situation leadership classified as below 

  • Directing is high on directing behavior, but low on supporting behavior
  • Coaching is high on both directing and supporting behavior
  • Supporting is low on directing behavior, but high on supporting behavior
  • Delegating is low on both directing and supporting behavior

The above diagram shows situational leadership was developed illustrated the importance of organizational factors and it builds leadership performance within organizations (Balanchard & Hersey, 1977)

 

Exploring organizational factors and how it impact practical implications for top executives, to improve outcomes at the organizational level and meet their business objectives, may provide an avenue into identifying the catalysts of  leadership performance in Organizations (Rahmat, et al., 2019).


Situational leadership is a model which supported with ongoing organizational objectivesto keep the monkey off of your back and develop highly competent and committed employees, learn motivational leadership, emotional intelligence may effect in productivity, retention, team building and customer loyalty programmes (Wijesiri, 2014).

  

In global contexts, Former chief executive at Coca-Cola and Revlon can be considered as an example of situational leader, through his experience he believes situational leaders can step into any circumstances and recognize whether they need to engage at the strategy level or dive into the nitty gritty (Prewitt, 2007).

In Sri Lanka, during this pandemic era, many corporate leaders are realise the advances in information technology and connectivity showing their situational leadership skills while aligning & strengthening their stake holders with emotional resilience and that of their Organizations. these are the skills which helping them to achieve their organizational goals and it will make them strong in the years ahead (Peiris, 2020)

  

 

Conclusion

Understanding the situational leadership, a leader can improve his or her diagnosis and awareness, by understanding the needs of his or her subordinates, as well as the demands of the task, the leader can show more empathy, efficiency and flexibility, which can help boost team morale and even enhance productivity eventually which is effecting in the organizations performance.

Situational leadership is strengthening in today’s changing global business environment.

  1. The leadership style practiced by managers greatly influences the performance and productivity at the work place. The situation leadership model encourages managers to flexibly use their leadership style based on the situation and thus achieve effective results. Overall a very good work.
